Pacific Northwest Coast

Spectacular volcanoes, unexplored mountains, and pristine Pacific beaches.

The Estero Padre Ramos Nature Reserve is one of the most ecologically important natural areas in Nicaragua and is one of the largest mangrove estuaries left in the world. With more than 175 species of birds, 3 species of sea turtles, iguanas, conch, mollusks, crabs, caimans, crocodiles, butterflies, tubeworms, and fish galore, this protected wildlife sanctuary is also a nature lover’s paradise. One of the least discovered traveler’s destinations in Nicaragua, the Estero Padre Ramos offers a special destination for travelers who prefer to venture “off the beaten track”.

In addition, more spectacular nature can be found within the area of the Cosigüina Volcano. There are hot springs that heat a local pool, and wetlands provide shelter to thousands of birds and other animals. This volcano erupted violently in 1835 when one third of the crater was blown away and ash rained down as far as Mexico City and Jamaica. The large crater then filled with rain water and a spectacular crater lake was formed over the years. The Cosigüina Volcano offers stunning views as far as Honduras and El Salvador.
